Dr. Seuss Eucharist - Side Show - Potluck - Annual General Meeting

     We had a great service on Sunday morning past, Feb. 2nd at St. Luke's Hall.  Rev. Andrew used a new liturgy that some call "Seusscharist" - a Eucharist of simpler language and rhyme geared towards children in a Dr. Seuss theme and time.   Adults enjoy it too!

     In the past few years, in lieu of a sermon/message on the day of the Annual General Meeting Rev. Andrew turns it over to a wonderful slide presentation by Christine Batten - she collects photos all year long from parishioners showing the goings-on, services, suppers, fundraisers, etc. in the life our church and community.

And after they ate, he picked up a drink
And said, “There’s more in here than you think
This is My Blood that I give for you
And for those who think their life is through
Because they sin, they should be living
And remember our God is always forgiving.”

     Following the service we had a wonderful potluck lunch.  Then it was down to business for our Annual General Meeting - we were finished within an hour.

Joint Parish Service at St. Luke's and Rededication of Hall

     We had a wonderful service at St. Luke's O'Leary on Sunday morning!  We were honoured with the presence of The Right Reverend Bishop Sue Moxley who conducted the service along with Rev. Andrew, Lay Reader Jan and Altar Server Olivia.  The church was full and the music was wonderful, provided by Adrienne, Perry and Claude along with the children's band.

     Following the service the St. Luke's Hall rededication was conducted by Bishop Sue and Rev. Andrew with guest speakers, Hon. Robbie Henderson, MLA and Minister of Tourism, Brenda Profitt, Local Development Officer, along with Perry and Adrienne who thanked all those who donated time and effort to see the project through to completion.

     St. Luke's Hall has recently gone through a major renovation and improvement.  The Hall was originally a horse barn for the Church parishioners.  In the 1950's it was moved around to its present location and a new wood floor was installed in time for Colston and Helen Wood's wedding.  The Hall has served parishioners and the community for more than 60 years and with the new renovations will serve for many, many more years to come.

     Following the rededication of the Hall we had a wonderful potluck lunch followed by a Kitchen Party!

St. Luke's O'Leary 1907 Postcard

     P.E.I. Museum and Heritage Foundation has transformed an old medium, the picture postcard, into a new format: the online photos using Flickr.  More than 500 historic postcard images from the Provincial Collection spanning communities across Prince Edward Island can be viewed on the foundation's Flickr site at www.flickr.com/photos/pei_museum. Many of the postcards date from the early 1900s and continue on as late as the ‘70s and ‘80s.

St. Luke's Kitchen Party's end for the Season

The last Kitchen Party for the season was held at St. Luke's Hall on Wednesday evening, Oct. 19th.  There was a good crowd and lots of talent in the performers!  Thanks to the Kitchen Party Band for a very successful season - special thanks to, Perry Batten; Antia Doucette, the Arsenault brothers; Al Peters; Claude Frederickson and Aunt Flossy (aka Adrienne) - Special thanks to the organizers; to those who donated pies, money, etc.; and to the volunteers who worked in the kitchen to get refreshments ready.

The St. Luke's Hall renovations are nearly finished - the kitchen is in and a bit of painting, etc. is left to do.  Note the new entry verandah in the front corner of the Hall.

Adjacent to the Hall is St. Luke's Anglican Church - work on the tower and entrance is nearly complete as well.  The church was built in the late 1880's and consecrated the same day as Holy Trinity Alma Anglican Church in October 1890.

I was by St. Luke's Hall yesterday morning - here's some photos.  The project is expected to wrap up in 2 or 3 weeks.  It looks great!

The renovation/addition to St. Luke's Hall is coming along well.  Here's a photo taken yesterday.  This the Kitchen Parties are being held weekly in July and August - every Wednesday evening at 7:30pm.

The St. Luke's Hall renovations/addition is coming along with the new entrance and kitchen addition roof built and shingled.

Flat Stacey at St. Luke's

Here's Rev. Andrew with some of St. Luke's Sunday School children with Flat Stacey.  The project was an interactive learning event for Sunday School children and teachers through-out the Diocese of Nova Scotia & Prince Edward Island.  Each student got a Flat Stacey or Flat Stanley to colour and on the back put their name and church address, then send it off to Synod.  At Synod, each table had a Flat Stacey and Flat Stanley and people sitting at those tables were asked to take a Flat Stacey or Flat Stanley back to their home church and photograph it with the people of that church then return it to the Sunday School student and their church family.

St. Luke's Sunday School donates to Western Hospital

These are the teddy bears that the St. Luke's Sunday School donated to the Western Hospital in Alberton.  They collected 50 in total and are to be given out to children who are admitted to the hospital.

At the beginning of the year (Jan 2011) Janet asked the St. Luke's Sunday School children to think of ways they could help people in their community. They came up with a few ideas, held a fundraising bake sale at the O'Leary Co-Op and raised $200 which will be used in a few ways to help-out people, ie. teddy bears for sick children in the community.  The children have a few more ideas, stay tuned, we'll let you know what they do next.

I was by the hall last evening and observed the foundation and floor is on for the new entry and kitchen addition - things are moving along well!!

First Kitchen Party of 2011

Here's some photos from the first Kitchen Party of the summer held last week at St. Luke's O'Leary - thanks for the photos Christine!  It was held in the church due to Hall renovations.  The next Kitchen Party, on Wednesday, June 15th will be held in the Hall.
